How meta can you get? The New York Times is reporting that big-screen e-readers are coming to the aid of beleaguered newspaper and print publications and that Amazon will be the first to the party, as early as this week:

An Amazon spokesman would not comment, but some news organizations, including The New York Times, are expected to be involved in the introduction of the device, according to people briefed on the plans. A spokeswoman for The Times, Catherine J. Mathis, said she could not comment on the company’s relationship with Amazon.

I like the idea of a New York Times reporter calling a New York Times PR person for a skinny on this story. For its part, Amazon has announced a media event this Wednesday at Pace University, the site of the 19th century NYT headquarters.

Really, at what point does NYT news become PR?

Full disclosure: I work at Amazon but I am not involved in the development of Kindle, nor do I know anything about release schedules. I feel like I should be calling our PR department to get the same canned response that the NYT reporter did.
