- Architecture: A former Dutch chapel that has been converted into a minimalist residence. I love the way the stained glass offsets the white, spare character of the living space. I couldn’t live in it, but it’s really neat to look at.
- Film: The Golem: Or How He Came Into the World. Interesting review of a 1920 horror film that apparently creates many of the latter film tropes.
But there will always be something captivating and mysterious about this first silent being, the Golem, brought to life not by experimenting with corpses but through language, a secret word placed in an amulet. And though the remakes and sequels of horror movies continue to hold a cathartic and ritual-like power in our culture, I have yet to see a film that so simply and enigmatically deals with metaphysics and religion as this 1920 masterpiece.
- Books: Every book at the Library of America is on sale through December 4th. Just use the code LIB2009 to receive 15% all orders under $60 and 20% off all orders over $60. I’m particularly interested in the new American Fantastic Tales: Terror and the Uncanny from Poe to Now.
