My Faves for Tuesday, March 25, 2008

by Eric Franklin on March 26, 2008

This sounds like an interesting book about reading, speculating that the act itself is one of improvisation and that it changes the brain in positive ways.

Quoted: Reading, says Wolf, changed history. More than that, it changes the brain. It creates new pathways in the brain, and, by doing this, makes us think in new ways. When you read, you see letters written on a page, then you recognise them as representations of sounds made by the human voice, then you join the sounds together to make words, then you fit the words together into sentences.

I love how the only full sized statue of Dickens was made by the Americans as a present to the British, and that that present had to be sent back to to respect Dickens’s wishes.

Quoted: Seeking an appropriate means of marking the 200th anniversary of his birth, several of Dickens’ descendants have come out in support of a commemorative statue at Eastgate House, Rochester, Kent, a building that appears in many of his novels, including The Pickwick Papers.

Yahoo Disaster Scenario: Blowing Q1 by Henry Blodget
Perhaps it’s just me but I’ve never believed in Microsoft’s intentions to purchase Yahoo. They may very well end up doing it, but it will be on Microsoft terms. If it’s true that Microsoft is mostly interested in the human capital (which is what they’ve said), then they may be OK with destabilizing the Yahoo brand in order to get a discount on the actual heads they want. Anyways, this article is an interesting piece of speculation about what might occur should Yahoo miss its quarterly estimates.

Free Ebook: Charles Bock’s “Beautiful Children”

by Eric Franklin on February 27, 2008

Not that it’s a huge surprise, but I’m a big fan of free literature. I like it even more when it’s digital and there’s no need to toss a book out on its head once I’m done reading it. Charles Bock is a first time author receiving high praise for his new novel “Beautiful Children.” I downloaded a copy of the book and read the opening scenes. It looks like it will be a rip-roaring good read. I don’t generally endorse writers I haven’t read personally but come on, it’s free!

I wasn’t aware that rammed earth was such an efficient building source. I wonder what the upkeep is for buildings made this way? Do they wear down over time or can you form it hard enough to hold up over the long haul?

My Faves for Monday, February 18, 2008

Not exactly certain why I’ve been so crazy on the architecture front lately but I love the bedroom and wooded setting behind this environmental home. The flow between the interior and exterior spaces seems really nice.
