The Burning of the Television Cultural Centre in Beijing

by Eric Franklin on February 10, 2009

The Television Cultural Centre by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture burned down in Beijing last night. Exquisite photos of the aftermath as well as the fire itself can be seen on Andrew Lih’s Flickr Album. While I don’t have any fascination with chaos and destruction, the thought of these urban symbols of time do interest [...]

Living Small

by Eric Franklin on October 3, 2008

NBC news does a short piece on tiny houses and tiny living.

At first blush I thought the thing was hideous and the video below didn’t help much… initially. If you can get past the atrocious elevator music though, you can see a pretty interesting dynamic structure and design which would be highly resistant to high winds and earthquakes.

Architecture: Chilean Hillside Beauty

by Eric Franklin on August 27, 2008

I love this house on a Chilean hillside, particularly the way the house amplifies the view by opening its entire downhill facade onto the valley. The sloped deck leading into the lap pool may be a little bit of an accident waiting to happen. I can’t help but wonder if that would violate some crazy [...]

Interesting tidbits

by Eric Franklin on August 12, 2008

Literature: The image of Franz Kafka as a saint and a recluse is turning out not to be true. A new book explores Kafka’s porn collection and how it may change academic readings. I’m exploring all options on getting the most bang for my buck while maintaining a sense of modern style and fitting into the rustic terrain. That’s why I find this remodeled stable so [...]

The lunchtime presenter at Seed 3 was Edward Lifson who dropped in to tell us a bit about the building we were in. I’ll admit, I loved the Seed Conference, but Crown Hall was easily one of the largest stars of the day for me. I became an enthusiastic Mies van der Rohe fan while [...]

Jason Fried decided to part with the “Getting Real” presentations he’s been giving for a while and focused on why the details matter and how 37signals thinks about the details of their products. His talk was sprinkled with tons of application demonstrations and interface development experience. Fried started with a high level discussion on the [...]

Empty Shibuya Station, Tadao Ando

by Eric Franklin on June 23, 2008

Imagine standing in a completely vacant Shibuya Station admiring the lines: up, down, left, right. Beautiful. An opportunity that doesn’t exist in the everyday. It has the atmosphere of one of those hidden spaces accessed through Haruki Murakami’s fiction. Does anyone have an idea of how to take a screenshot of a flash tour like [...]

The Shack at Hinkle Farm by Jeffery S. Broadhurst

by Eric Franklin on June 18, 2008

We’re in the process of closing on some beautiful property outside of Walla Walla in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. As a result, we’ve been very interested in pre-fab and/or very inexpensive structures that will allow us to enjoy the property on long weekends. “The Shack at Hinkle Farm” by Broadhurst Architects is exactly [...]
