84 square feet of lovingly made house. I’ve got to say, the opportunity to live without a mortgage sounds mighty appetizing.

Writer Michael Pollan has an adorable writing house. I’d like one of those!

I love the idea. Famous writer gives short story messages in a bottle. The recipient has the option to bash the story out of there or leave it as it is.

Quoted: So this is cool: Michael Swanwick, who has published both a new novel (The Dragons of Babel) and a new collection of short stories (The Dog Said Bow-Wow) in the last four months, unwinds by writing short-shorts, sealing them in a bottle, then destroying every other copy or draft of the novel that exists on paper or hard drive. And then he gives it away—”usually to a charity auction or such, but sometimes to a friend,” he explains. “The owner of the bottle, whoever he or she is, can either read the story or else possess the object—but cannot do both.”

A detailed look at the creation of characters in various writing styles.

Quoted: From Jane Eyre to Jean Brodie, David Copperfield to David Brent, whether solidly realised or lightly sketched, fictional figures can be as vivid to us as real people. But just what, exactly, is a character, asks James Wood

“Son of Rambow” Movie Preview

Posted in Video, Film on January 30th, 2008 by Eric Franklin

In the 80’s, when this film is set, my brothers and I used to make “Super Dave” videos with phony stunts, stubbed in with all the dangerous parts being done by a dummy. We dragged the dummy behind a 3-wheeler, dropped it off the roof, shot it, etc. Good times. This film preview reminds me of that time.

The karma of Dengue Fever

Posted in Music on January 29th, 2008 by Eric Franklin

OK. Weird title. One of those gifts that keeps on giving. Probably not the best reference when you’re speaking about an infectious disease but perfectly acceptable when you’re speaking about an original music group with infectious grooves. Beware of a sudden impulse to twitch rythmically.

There are some people who believe what you put out to the world comes back to you, that whole karmic cycle thing. Honestly, one of the nicest things about having a blog is that I can talk about things I enjoy and occasionally get valuable interactions back from people I’ve never met before. Such is the case with the amazing international music sensation, Dengue Fever.

Hey Dengue, if any of you see this, your PR company is earning their money! One of my brief mentions of the new album on Faves.com and a cross-post over here on my blog earned me a nice response from the PR firm handling the band. They gave me the following free mp3 music track to share with all of you (and a little hint that a Seattle show may be forthcoming soon - wink, wink, nudge, nudge):

MP3: Dengue Fever - Venus on Earth, “Sober Driver”

Dengue Fever, “Venus on Earth”
Download from Amazon for only $7.99!

Let me know what you think of that track in the comments. Download it. Share the wonders of Dengue Fever with your friends! Wait, that just sounds weird…

Creepy Mark Twain “The Mysterious Stranger” Video

Posted in Writing, Video, Books on January 24th, 2008 by Eric Franklin

Evidently, Mark Twain went a bit existentialist as he aged and spent the final 20 years of his life working off and on on a story encapsulating some epiphanies related to the dream-like nature of life. What he came up with is a bit darker than most people would probably believe came from Twain.

It’s worth while to take a few minutes to read the wikipedia article on “The Mysterious Stranger” before watching the creepy video below. Just call it your literary moment of the day.

“Taxi to the Darkside” coming to Seattle Varsity Theater - 2/8/2008

The trailer for the new documentary “Taxi to the Darkside” looks like it will be another fantastic documentary from the same director that made “The Smartest Guys in the Room.” A documentary tracing the unexplained detention and death of an Afghani taxi driver.

Check out the to view the trailer. It’s worth it.

I had not heard of Laura Albert but apparently she got in trouble for creating a fictional identity to publish her fiction. That seems like an extension of artistic license to me. I mean, she’s not overtly lying in a memoir like some other authors of recent memory. What’s the hubbub?

Following up on the success of “The Gates” art project in 2005, New York city will be having four waterfalls installed for this summer. This may be the time I finally make it out there to check out the city!

Quoted: NEW YORK (Reuters) - Four giant waterfalls will be erected in New York for three months this summer in a public art project city officials hope will create $55 million in extra tourism revenue for the

A photo exploration of the Long Duration Exposure Facility, a 30′ X 14′ cyclinder we put into space to see what the exposure would do. Attached to the outside were panels of various experiments. Very neat!

Quoted: the nonist, now searching recorded history for some semblance of truth.

Reading Tea Leaves: iPhone + MacBook Air = Sweet Ubiquity

Posted in Technology on January 17th, 2008 by Eric Franklin

Wager time. Many people are underwhelmed by Apple’s new ultra-thin laptop. The chief complaint (along with the lack of adequate storage) seems to be the lack of a persistent data connection via 3G, WiMax, 4G, etc. After all, if you’re purchasing the ultimate in mobility, you kind of want to be able to access the internet from anywhere.

Here’s my prediction, and you can take this to the bank:

By the end of 2008, Apple will enable a speedier data connection on the iPhone and enable the MacBook Air (and their other portable computers) to utilize that data connection. This will be the ubiquitous data connection all the winers are looking for.

How certain am I? Well, the AT&T CEO is already on record saying that the iPhone will have 3G this year. The MacBook air has no card slot. Bingo, bango, bongo. Quod erot demonstrandum.

iPhone + MacBook Air = ;^)
